Get Started on the Future!

With the App to the Future Design Challenge

Now you can change the future by designing an app for Windows Phone that helps you create better, connect with your loved ones or just impresses the pants off your future self.

The great apps of the future will empower you, so focus your entries into one of these three categories:

  • Design to Do. Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life—this is your chance to create an app that helps you do what you love. What part of the design process are you most passionate about? Design an app that focuses on creativity and improve it.
Examples: Spark brainstorms, capture inspiration and organize your ideas. Or keep your pencils, resistors or bike gears inventoried.
  • Design to Connect. Sometimes it isn’t what you’re doing as much as who you’re doing it with. Design an app that keeps you close and connected with the people you love and care about.
Examples: Share family recipes—with just your family. Or create birthday alerts with gift buying window countdown clock reminders.
  • Design to Delight. Have an idea that just tickles you? Harness the power of that computer in your pocket and design an app that surprises and delights—get people excited about what they’re doing, and they’ll love it as much as you do.
Examples: Email pony pictures to people on their birthdays. Or track your hobbies—whether its counting trains, knitting stitches or how much stuff you can put on your cat, you gotta keep track.

FIVE winning app designs will be chosen and receive a Microsoft Surface, Windows Phone device, design review call with a Windows Phone team member and an opportunity to be featured in an “Amp Up Your App” segment on Microsoft Channel 9. 50 finalists will receive a one-year subscription to the Windows Phone Dev Center, and those who launch their apps in the Windows Phone Store can also win a Windows Phone device.

Register to enter—create an account, login and submit as many app ideas as you want until 11:59pm EST Sunday, February 10, 2013.

Getting Your Entry Ready

No need to code! Each entry needs the name of your app, a description, and up to five screen images from your app design. Photoshop templates and additional resources and tools to help you design are available in the Resources. Once your app is mocked up, you can also include a walk-through presentation of it by uploading a video or .pdf file.

1. Tell Us About Your App

Each app needs a name and description (500 words max). Identify problems and your unique solutions. And be sure to address which category your app fits into.

2. Up to 5 Images

Mock up your app design with SketchFlow, use the Photoshop templates in Resources, or scan your brilliant napkin sketches. Upload up to five .jpg or .png image files. At least one image is required.

3. Two-Minute Video

Optional. Create a video that illustrates key or charming interaction. Show why we want to use your app. Upload up to two minutes of a .mov, .mpg, .wmv, .avi, or .m4v file.

4. Supporting Presentation

Optional. Create a prototype with Sketchflow and submit the application file (.xap file) from your project package, or make a linear presentation of your app. Upload one .xap, one .pdf, or one of each file.
