App to the Future is an app design competition open to the international design community, challenging entrants to design and mockup conceptual apps for the Windows Phone platform to help with their day-to-day challenges, better connect with their family or friends, or showcase an innovative, new app idea. The goals of Core77 and Microsoft are to showcase and triumph innovative designs through the Core77 Design Network of websites and the Microsoft Windows Phone Store and related websites such as Channel 9. Top winning entrants will be further encouraged to develop and sell their app in the Windows Phone Store utilizing prizes, resources and assistance provided by Core77 and Microsoft.

The following are the Official Rules for the Fast Track to the Mobile App competition;

The App to the Future challenge (the “Competition”) is organized and administered by Core77, Inc. (“Core77″), located at 561 Broadway, Suite 6b, New York, NY 10012 and Competition prizes will be provided by Microsoft (“Microsoft”) located at 1 Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052-6399 (collectively, the “Sponsors”)

The Competition is open to participants from anywhere in the world, aged eighteen (18) years or older at the time of entry. The Competition is subject to all applicable national, regional, local laws and regulations, and is void where prohibited by law. The following are not eligible to enter the Competition or to win prizes: (i) Sponsors’ employees, (ii) Sponsor’s affiliates’ employees, (iii) the immediate families (defined as spouses, parents, siblings, children, grandparents and in-laws) of any such employees and (iv) any members of such families’ households, whether or not related. Entrants (as defined in the section entitled ‘How to Enter’ below) may participate and submit entries as independently operating individuals or as part of larger teams.

Core77 and Microsoft challenge participants to design, describe, and mockup the appearance and utility of a mobile app for everyday production, personal connections or delightful entertainment, intended for use on Microsoft’s ‘Windows Phone’ platform. Winning entries should describe apps that address one of three categories: design to do, design to connect, or design to delight. Winning entries additionally will be recognized for their visual aesthetic and their innovative use of technology and features of the Windows Phone platform. A Competition entry will consist of screen designs showing what the app looks like along with a written description describing its use. Entries may be submitted online at (“Competition Website”). Additionally, Entrants (defined below) may choose to submit further documentation such as video, or interactive presentations, as described on the Competition Website, illustrating the effectiveness of the app design.

The submission period for entry begins on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 12:00pm EST and ends on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 11:59pm EST (the “Entry Period”). Entries received before or after the Entry Period will not be accepted for judging.

The Competition is free to enter, and there are no fees imposed by the Sponsors for registration and participation in the Competition. To enter the Competition participants will need to register for an entry account by signing up online at where access to entry materials and submission tools is provided. For team based submissions, a single Entrant (defined below) is required to submit the entry materials on behalf of the entire team. Additional space is provided with each entry to identify and credit all team members. Entrants may submit multiple entries per entry account within the Entry Period. Entries will only be accepted via electronic submission using the Competition Website. In the event of a dispute as to any registration, the authorized account holder of the email address used to register will be deemed to be the entrant (the “Entrant”).

An entry consists of a description of the app being submitted (at least one paragraph) and up to five supporting images depicting the app’s use and function (collectively such materials may be referred to in these Official Rules as, a “Competition Entry”). Optional supporting video and/or presentation files (in Silverlight or PDF formats) are also accepted at the time of entry submission. Each Competition Entry must be representative of a Windows Phone app designed for creation or productivity, connecting with family or friends, or delighting the user.

All entry materials must be in English or have English translation made available where necessary.

An Entrant (or team member) may belong to more than one team making Competition Entries, so long as such Entrant does not submit Competition Entries that are deemed by the judges of the Competition (the “Judges”) to be too similar to such Entrant’s competing teams’ Competition Entries.

Any Entrant who, in the judgment of the Sponsors, violates any prohibition in these Official Rules may be disqualified.

All Competition Entries must be original in their concept and design. Entrants may enter multiple submissions; provided each entry is substantially different in its purpose and design. In the event submissions from an Entrant or from a participant on a team based entry are considered too similar by the Judges to both be considered, the first submission received will be considered.

The five winning finalist Competition Entries will be eligible to win the prizes and opportunities set forth in the section entitled, ‘Competition Prizes’ below.

Competition Entries may be rejected if they are deemed by the Sponsors in their sole discretion to be obscene, inappropriate, suggestive of illegal activity, or violative of the rights of any individual in any way. Submissions must be the original work of the Entrant, be solely owned by the Entrant with no other entity having right or interest in it, and not violate the Intellectual Property rights (copyright, trademark, patent, contract, or privacy rights) of any other person or entity.

Entrant may contract with a third party for technical assistance to create the submission provided the app is solely the Entrant’s work and the result of the Entrant’s ideas and creativity and that the Entrant owns all right, title and interest in and to the Competition Entries.

Each Entrant retains full rights in and to their Competition Entry, however, by entering the Competition Entrant grants the Sponsors (jointly) the perpetual, fully-paid irrevocable, non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, display, distribute, exhibit, transmit, broadcast, digitize, otherwise use, and permit others to use, exhibit and perform throughout the world such Competition Entry and its contents, for promotional purposes with respect to the Competition, without any compensation to or acknowledgment of the Entrant (other than the prizes and opportunities set forth in these Official Rules).

By entering a Competition Entry, each Entrant and associated team member hereby irrevocably consents to the display, performance, and other use by Sponsors and each of their respective successors and assigns of his/her name; image; likeness; voice; Competition Entry; biographical information provided; all of his/her other personal or commercial attributes or identifying features (each, a “Likeness”) for any purposes related to the Competition. All Entrants, winning and non-winning hereby waive any and all rights of publicity and rights of privacy associated with Sponsors use of a Likeness. Winning Entrants shall have no right of approval, no claim to compensation, and no claim (including, without limitation, claims based on invasion of privacy, defamation, or right of publicity) arising out of any use, blurring, alteration, or use in composite form of a Likeness. The rights granted under this paragraph are without compensation or notification to the Entrant of any kind, except as required by law, and shall extend to all Competition Entries, all other materials submitted by Entrant, and all other materials developed in connection with the Competition, regardless of whether they are developed by the Entrant or another person or entity.

Competition Entries will be screened by a preliminary panel of Judges selected by the Sponsors. Such preliminary panel will judge each Competition Entry based on the criteria identified below. Finalist submissions will further be evaluated by a finalist panel of Judges as identified on the Competition Website.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • + Entry effectively addresses one of the three category themes of empowering creation, connectedness or delight.
  • + Entry explores an original idea or innovative use of the platform or technology.
  • + Entry establishes a distinct and considered language of interaction and visual design that improves the user experience.
  • + Entry can be developed into a working version on the Windows Phone platform to the best of the entrant and judges knowledge.
  • + Entry utilizes Window Phone design principles.

All judging in the Competition shall remain fair and impartial. Any Judge may recuse himself or herself from judging a Competition Entry if the Judge or the Sponsors consider it inappropriate for any reason. An Entrant’s likelihood of winning will depend primarily on quality of their Competition Entries, as determined by the Judges using the criteria listed above.

Potential winners will be notified via email approximately one to three weeks from the end of the Entry Period and no later than March 1, 2013. All winners will need to sign an affidavit of eligibility, and a liability/publicity release (the “Affidavit and Release”) which will be provided by the Sponsors.

A potential winner will be considered ineligible if the Entrant: (i) cannot be contacted after three reasonable attempts by the Sponsors; (ii) fails to sign and return the Affidavit and Release; or (iii) is disqualified for any other reason. Should a finalist Entrant not be able to accept their prize for any unforeseen condition, Judges may select an alternate prize winner.
